Kelp (Kombu): Iodine Benefits, Thyroid Risks and Safety
Also known asKombu, konbu (Japanese), dashima (Korean: 다시마) or haidai (simplified Chinese: 海带; traditional Chinese: 海帶; pinyin: Hǎidài) Saccharina japonica

On this pageWhat is kelp?
Kelp is a group of large brown seaweeds. Kombu, including Saccharina japonica, is one common edible form.
Kelp can provide large amounts of iodine, an essential nutrient needed for thyroid-hormone production. The problem is that kelp’s iodine content varies enormously. Too much iodine can cause thyroid dysfunction as well as too little.
What is kelp?
“Kelp” describes several brown seaweeds in the order Laminariales.
Kelp is used as food, in soup stocks, in seasoning, in supplements, and as a source of alginates used in food and industry.
Why is kelp high in iodine?
Seaweed concentrates iodine from seawater.
Iodine is required to make the thyroid hormones T4 and T3.
How much iodine can seaweed contain?
The amount is highly variable.
Commercial seaweeds can range from relatively modest iodine amounts to several thousand micrograms per gram.
This variation makes it difficult to predict iodine exposure simply from the word “kelp.”
Does kelp improve thyroid function?
Kelp can provide iodine when dietary iodine intake is inadequate.
That does not mean kelp improves thyroid function in people who already have sufficient iodine.
Hypothyroidism has many causes, and most cases are not treated simply by taking more iodine.
Can too much kelp harm the thyroid?
Yes.
Excessive iodine can cause hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, goiter, and thyroiditis.
Susceptible people may experience problems at intakes below a formal upper limit.
Cases of thyroid dysfunction have been reported after kelp-containing teas and supplements.
What other safety concerns exist?
Seaweed can contain arsenic and other elements absorbed from the marine environment.
Kelp composition therefore depends on species and source.
Does kelp interact with medicines?
Iodine supplements can interact with antithyroid medicines and, in some formulations, medicines that affect potassium.
Who should avoid kelp supplements?
Extra caution is particularly important for people with thyroid disease, people taking thyroid or antithyroid medication, pregnant or breastfeeding people, and people taking iodine-containing supplements already.
Pregnancy requires enough iodine, but excessive maternal seaweed intake can also create problems.
Frequently asked questions
Is kelp good for hypothyroidism?
Only some thyroid problems are related to iodine deficiency. Unsupervised kelp can worsen thyroid function.
Is more iodine better?
No. Both deficiency and excess can cause problems.
